SLAUGHTER HOUSE

The first time I viewed the derelict slaughterhouse in Wiesbaden, near Frankfurt, Germany, I was struck by the atmosphere of death and suffering. Horrific machines for skinning and processing pigs lay idle. I decided it could make an excellent venue for a large series of installations. I met two local artists, Marc Behrens and Torsten Grosch – we came up with a general plan for the building which was developed into a series of individual installations in various parts of the space.
Many of the machines and structures for processing the pigs were cut up and used as new structures. The actual event was attended by over 2.000 people of all walks of life. Due to the success of this event and the involvement of local artists the slaughterhouse has become a permament culture centre.
What was interesting about the differing approaches of the invited artists was that all the actual installations barring two were centered on the theme of death. These were realized in differing formats from interactive installations to films being projected. The pieces created by myself were simple line paintings on large transparent plastic tarpaulins – these were lit from behind by can lighting which grew dipped with intensity.
A video of the entire project is available on request.
