CONCUSSION
The exhibition CONCUSSION opened on 6th of december 2008 in the "Intrude 366" space at the Zendai Museum of Modern Art Shanghai. The "Intrude 366" project was a directive of the Zendai MoMA and entailed a contemporary art event taking place every day in 2008. These events encompassed all contemporary art forms, including workshops and seminars. MoMA had secured over sixty off site locations around Shanghai as well as the museum itself for the project. These locations ranged from large warehouses to public spaces, the artist exhibiting could choose the most suitable locations for their project.
The artists that were selected by the curator Biljana Ciric for the project came from every corner of the globe and represented a more experimental approach to art making. The location chosen for CONCUSSION was at the museum itself. The installation CONCUSSION created for this project featured three video works and light boxes. The video section included three seperate subjects. The first video (left) was a multi layered piece using undecoded television signals accompanied by an electronic sequenced soundtrack by Berlin based Irish musician Keith O'Brien. The second video (centre) was a live monitor of the viewers of the installation. The third video (right) was an interview of random people conducted on the Nanjing Lu, Shanghais busiest thoroughfare. The interviewer asked people "What their opinion on contemporary art was? and What their favourite fruit was?" In excess of twenty five people were interviewed, and a twenty minuite video piece was recorded. For the installation both the left and right hand side videos were looped for continuious playback. The video section of the installation was presented in a tryptich manner, with the light boxes framing the works.
The reaction from the public viewing the installation was very interesting and ranged from amusement, curiosity and confusion. In essence the installation was concieved to interact in a very direct manner with inhabitants of Shanghai. The conclusion both i and the museum had was that not only was it a success in communicating to ordinary people but also to the many children that interacted with the installation. The interview was of particular interest to local people, and gave me the idea that the same interview could be carried out in New York, London, Paris and Berlin, with the result of a multi-cultural, multi-lingual presentation.
